    Problem in Channel

If you have a concern, complaint, or even a word of encouragement, we hope you will share it with us. Send us an e-mail with your question or concern. We'll do what we can to meet your needs.

Need to tell us about a problem in the channel?

If the matter concerns someone, or something that happened in channel, be sure that you include in the email the section of log that highlights the problem, and any relevant private conversation you may have had.

"But I don't log conversations" you may say...
Well, there is no problem there, because even if you don't normally do so, all chat programs have the ability to save the current window buffer to a filename of your choice - which you may then copy and paste into an email, or send as an email attachment.

Please do not edit the file in any way whatsoever. If necessary we shall match your transcript with that from the channel bot and/or those of any ops present.

If a particular "user" - either a guest or an op - appears to be a problem in your eyes, make sure you obtain information on that person by doing a /whois nick command in your channel window. Then paste that information into your email as well.

If the matter concerns an op, please remember that he or she may be applying the rules that everybody in channel are bound by, and this may be in a way that can differ from your understanding of chat rooms. Please take a moment to visit the policies page on this website before making such a complaint.

However, if the op concerned has not treated you fairly, the matter will be investigated, and not just swept under the carpet. Even ops can make mistakes, and there may have been a misunderstanding, created by you, or the op, or even by a third party,or by a combination of people.

Please remember, though, that generally we allow those who run the channel in the absence of the "Owner" to make disciplinary decisions, which naturally are made according to the perspective of the op in channel at the time. Supervising a channel while one or more guests are being "awkward" can be difficult in seeing exactly which conversations and/or remarks are causing problems, particularly if the person supervising has been called away and then returns.

Complaints about being kicked, devoiced,or banned for using particular words in channel, or for having an attitude towards authority or the stated policies of the channel, are unlikely to succeed in an appeal. Please remember that nobody forces another person to join a particular channel, and that all are free to start their own channels, with whatever rules they believe are appropriate for them.

In our channels, we have already determined the rules - which have not changed appreciably in six years - so you are very welcome to attend in our "rooms" if you are prepared to follow the rules already set down :)
