How to apply for Ops in #Christian:
Important things to know first:
It is important that you have been visiting our channel for at least a few months. It probably takes that long to get a feel for how the channel is run, what the other Ops are like, and what kinds of discussions go on there.
Be sure you agree with how we handle things there. If you don't, perhaps you would be more comfortable Opping for another channel.
Very importantly, if you feel that you are on a one-person crusade to convert others to your way of thinking, then the odds are you would be better starting your own channel, as we would probably find such behaviour very divisive.
Without exception, all of our ops have a tolerance for other viewpoints that can be deduced from interpreting scripture differently... discussions promoting differing views of scriptural interpretation frequently take place, and none of our ops take objection to those differing views, if they are genuinely based on scripture. Where there are glaring errors promoted, that is another story.
Familiarize yourself with this website - whether you are a long-standing regular, or a fairly new one; we ask this as much as anything because the content of the pages does change fairly regularly, in order to clarify stuff that may not have been explained properly before.
Mainly, though, we ask because it's important that you know where we stand as a ministry on issues of faith, and how we ministry approach the channel's activity.
Be prepared for what may seem to be a rejection out of hand. Remember that the other ops may not "know" you. A rejection is frequently accompanied by a "please resubmit in so-many weeks" request, and it could just be that you are an unknown quantitiy.
Please remember that very few applications are accepted first time round, usually there is a request for a re-submission. And a request to be granted operator privileges is just that, a request; it is not a right to receive that "status" as Undernet describes it; all ops appointments in #Christian are made at the invitation of the channel.
It's also important that you have good communications skills. So, do your best to explain yourself concisely and with articulation. Here is what we would like to receive from you:
Here's what to include in your email:
Once we receive your application, our Management Team (several of our senior and more experienced Ops) will review and discuss it, advising the other ops that you have applied, and usually inviting them for input as well.
You will hear from us after a review process is complete (this could take up to 30 days dependent on the familiarity of our management team with the applicant).
The problem may be purely that the applicant has conducted most of his or her chatting privately, rather than in the open "room" and if this is the case, the applicant will not be at all "known" to management, not indeed the other ops, who are always consulted by the Management Team during the selection process.
Another area that needs to be established is the level of support a would-be op is seen to give to the other ops in channel... particularly during a time of disruption by visitors. It's our prayer that all who visit our channel are blessed by the work of this ministry. Our desire beyond all else is to glorify God through His Son, Jesus Christ. We thank you for your desire to be a part of this ministry.
Once you have read all of the above, you may send your request via email using this link to christian-management@chatministries.org
What's next?
Should you be invited to join our team - and we stress joining is by invitation only - there will be a period of "mentoring" where you will be accompanied much of the time by an op more experienced in #Christian opping, and gently guided through a learning process aimed at producing someone who is more than a "wearer of boots for kicking".
Your mentor, if you are appointed, should be someone experienced - but not necessarily a senior op - but someone who is on-line at the same time of day as you are. You will be asked to nominate two or three such people, who will then be asked if they would be able to find the time to help you. You can check who are the ops in channel by looking at the "ops team page" on this site.
We believe that opping in #Christian is a calling, and that no matter how willing some applicants are, they may not have the temperament needed to recognise the difference between those who are plain disruptive, and those who are crying out for help and attention.
We need to exercise an unusual mix of being firm with the application of channel policies and yet be open to help someone acutely frustrated with life and what is going on around them. Not all applicants find it is possible to accept the strange (to some) way we operate.
After an introductory period the new op completes their "Probation" and is appointed as a regular "100-level" op... but the mentoring approach never stops. Your mentor - or another brother/sister op - is always available to help with difficulties, even if you are asked to become the Channel Manager one day. This is a very reassuring feature. It is part of the concept of accountability between brothers and sisters in Christ.
However, just as an op may need to exercise muscle towards guests who step out line, so does an op need to recognise that they also may need bringing into line at times. We work as a team. even if at times it is not obvious.
You may ask "What's a 100-level"? If that expression is meaningless, it might be useful for you to familiarise yourself with the structure of Starlink-IRC and Undernet channels. A 100-level channel operator is the base level "chanop". The larger the number, the more responsibility the person has in their channel.
You might find it interesting to visit the main undernet.org websites and browse through the historical and administrative stuff on there - which is where we first started nearly seven years ago... or the website of starlink-irc.org where we more recently established ourselves.
Some of this information is also duplicated on our own ops website, where you can also find all the bot commands available through CStar and logos9 (Starlink-IRC) or X and logos3 (Undernet).
